Introduction

Welcome to the Exchange Swimming Pool (ESP). ESP is a co-operative, non-profit pool. Membership is open to all, regardless of race, creed, color, or sex. ESP offers swimming, swim team, swimming lessons, and social activities during the Memorial Day to Labor Day season.

GOVERNANCE

Officers of ESP include a President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Assistant Treasurer. Board members also include coordinators for maintenance, volunteers, and swim team in addition to at-large members. All members in good standing are eligible to be elected to the Board. All terms are one (1) year with no term limits. Elections are held at the annual meeting, typically conducted at the Labor Day celebration.

Membership

Membership-in-good-standing requires the one-time purchase of a Membership Certificate as well as payment of seasonal dues and a yearly volunteer commitment (or its monetary equivalent).

MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATES

A Membership Certificate (MC) may be purchased from the ESP treasurer or purchased from a resigning member. The ESC board will set the sale rate annually for certificates sold by ESP. The names of resigning members are posted at the pool during the season and are available year-round on our website. To obtain a MC from a resigning member, it is the responsibility of the prospective member to contact a resigning member in good standing, negotiate a price, and pay the seller. If you buy from someone not on the list posted on the Exchange website - contact the membership coordinator before you finalize the transaction to make sure the account you are buying is in good standing (not in arrears).not skip this step!dated letter stating the sellers and buyers names and the transaction date is then submitted to the ESP secretary for approval and a new MC is issued.

Dues

Full season rates are available for individuals and families. Annual dues must be paid prior to June 1st of the current season to maintain ownership of a Membership Certificate. Dues must also be paid prior to pool use.

Desk Duty: By working fifteen three (3) hour shifts at the bath house reception desk, a member will be reimbursed $250 at the end of the season. The desk staff is responsible for member check-in, answering the telephone, selling guest passes, taking new member applications, etc.

Volunteer Requirement
The Exchange pool is owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit - who volunteer their time.We open and close the pool each year with the hard work of our membership. The volunteer system is the source of skills, talents, and willing hands and the reason for our friendly spirit and low dues. Lists of specific opportunities are posted at the pool and online by the volunteer coordinator each season. Each membership (individual or family) is charged a volunteer fee with their dues. Actual volunteers receive a rebate of this fee at the end of the season. Volunteer opportunities include spring pool opening. fall pool closing, front desk duty, landscaping, stuffing envelopes, social events, and much more. Members meeting their volunteer obligation will receive their volunteer fees back.

Pool Operations
Swim team practice: During swim team season (Pool opening to mid-July), weekday swim team practices are scheduled from 5 pm to 7 pm.   The pool remains open, but the section running perpendicular to the shallow area is unavailable. Morning swim practices are held before scheduled hours of operation.

Swim meets: The pool is closed to the general membership during 3 home swim meets each season.   The pool closes at 3:30 pm before a weekday meet and opens at noon after a Saturday meet.

Adult swim: The last 10 minutes of each hour are reserved for adult swim.  No one under the age of 16 is allowed in the pool.  The beginning and end of adult swim is signaled by one long whistle blast.

 SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN

Parents are directly responsible for watching their children in the baby pool and on the playground.  Parents must also supervise non-swimmers and children using floaties. Children may not be left alone at the pool during free swim unless they are at least 10 years old and can swim the length of the pool.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

At the first sign of thunder or lightening, three long whistle blasts means “clear the pool”.  The pool will reopen after 30 minutes of clear weather.

All party arrangements are made through the desk or pool manager

SWIM TEAM

The purpose of the swim team is to develop strong, safe swimmers in a fun environment. The swim team is offered to all young members from four to eighteen. To participate in a swim meet, the child must be able to swim one lap (25 yards) and have paid the swim team fee. The swim team competes in the Chapel Hill Summer Swim League, swimming against other local pools through June and early July and finishing with a Championship Meet in mid-July. During swim team season (Pool opening to mid-July), weekday swim team practices are scheduled from 5 pm to 7 pm. The pool remains open, but the section running perpendicular to the shallow area is unavailable. Morning swim practices which begin once schools are out for the Summer are held before scheduled hours of operation. Parental involvement is essential. Parents of swim team members are required to volunteer at swim meets. A free trial period is offered to new swimmers who are undecided about joining the team. A child is encouraged to come to practices, meet the other children, improve strokes and stamina, and then decide before June 1st of each season whether or not to join the team and pay the fee.
